Feast your senses. Thrill your mind. Tear at your heart.
The intrigue of the Spanish Inquisition comes to life as Adelaide’s much-loved Independent Theatre tackles one of the darkest and most thrilling periods in European history. Friedrich Schiller’s famous play Don Carlos—regarded as the German Hamlet—is a taut political thriller and a must-see if you love The Tudors and The Borgias.
The setting is 16th century Spain at the height of the Spanish Inquisition. Crown Prince Carlos is betrothed to his beloved Princess Elisabeth of France until his tyrannical father King Phillip II steps in and marries her. The tale unwinds as Carlos’ dangerous passion for his new stepmother explodes into a full-scale rebellion against his father’s oppressive and bloody regime.
The political drama, back-stabbing intrigue and timeless debate on justice, power, tolerance and liberty come to life in Independent Theatre’s latest production at the Goodwood Theatre from August 2 to 10. Renowned for bringing rich, extravagant stories to life, with sumptuous costumes and intriguing sets, Independent Theatre’s latest show is a tantalising take on Europe’s darkest hour.
